Bowyer’s Team Garners Pit Crew Challenge Win at Watkins Glen:

Bowyer’s Team Garners Pit Crew Challenge Win at Watkins Glen: Clint Bowyer’s #07 pit crew garnered the Checkers / Rally’s Double Drive-Thru Challenge win in Sunday’s Nextel Cup event at Watkins Glen International. Checkers/Rally’s will award the Jack Daniels crew with the $10,500 prize given each week to the team that spends the least amount of time on pit road. In addition, the crew that has earned the most pit crew challenge wins at the completion of the 36-race schedule will receive a $105,000 bonus. “It’s pretty exciting for the Jack Daniel’s Team to win for the second time this year, especially at Watkins Glen where we essentially pit the car backwards,” said #07 crew chief Gil Martin. “That throws a lot of teams off their game but our guys never missed a beat. Clint did a great job getting on and off pit road so this award is truly the result of a total team effort.” Bowyer’s over-the-wall team, out of the Richard Childress Racing stable, spent just 88.019 seconds on pit lane during Sunday’s AMD at The Glen. “The over-the-wall guys struggled a bit a couple weeks ago at Indianapolis so I’m really proud of them for bouncing back in a big way,” continued Martin. “Too often those guys get in trouble when something goes wrong on pit road so it’s important that they get the recognition they deserve when things go right.” Bowyer’s over-the-wall team includes: Carey Wimbish (jackman), Dail Long (front-tire carrier), Shane Westerberg (front-tire changer), Dustin Stanley (rear-tire carrier), Tommy Wallace (rear-tire changer), Ron Liddell (gasman), Clint Almquist (catch can) and Troy Welty (windshield). The team’s pit stop coordinator is Corinne Mauldin. The crews of Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson continue to lead the season-long competition with four wins each. Tony Stewart’s team is in second place with three wins.
The Checkers/Rally’s Double Drive-Thru Challenge is in its second season of rewarding pit crews, the unsung heroes in the Nextel Cup Series. The competition awards $10,500 per week to the top pit crew. In addition, the pit crew with the most wins will be awarded a $105,000 bonus at the completion of the 36-race schedule.
